Oops . . .

I don't know what happened. It's my fault, but I'm still looking to place blame on someone - anyone - else. Danny finished his insane Drug/Alchohol test online to get his Learner's Permit. At one point in the test, he was actually instructed to drink a beer and try the list of activities. Ummmmm .... not happening here. I think the course he took is geared to adults moving into FL, not teens. But, we couldn't get him into a virtual school with teen-based driver's ed until he was officially 15. He'll still be taking that class, but he was so anxious to get going. And, my feeling is the more supervised hours he has behind the wheel before he turns 16, the better.
Anyway, Danny is still beer-free and STILL managed to pass the Drug/Alcohol test. He and Mike were all set to head over to the DMV today to get his learner's permit (shudder). All I had to do was find his birth certificate and social security card. I have a manilla envelope that has everyone's birth certificates, social security cards, our marriage certificate and church documents. I know I have not used any of these since 2001. I know they have not left the house. We've had two filing cabinets since 1998 - I have dumped NOTHING from either.
I cannot find these documents. I had a basket in summer of 2004 where I dumped in every piece of paper I thought might be important. This was when Mike was in the hospital and we were getting pummeled by hurricane after hurricane. Nothing in the basket except house stuff. What was I thinking?
Where the heck did I put these things? I can picture the envelope in my mind - it's no where. Danny is being nice about it, but he's crushed.
I am going to have to get new birth certificates for all of us and THEN apply for new social security cards. I didn't have the heart to tell Dan that this all could take months. And, dammit, I know that envelope is in our house somewhere - I'm just out of places to look.
Upside, I've cleaned out the file cabinets and one closet ... maybe my next round of searching will yield even more clutter-free success.
Ideas on where this envelope might be? It's been so long since I've seen it. I hope no one is trying to steal our identity, but HAH on them if they do.
